The obverse of the 2017-W High Relief 225th Anniversary American Liberty Gold Coin shows Liberty with African-American features—something never before seen on U.S. coinage. She wears a crown of stars inspired by the Statue of Freedom on the Capitol dome. This portrait was designed by Justin Kunz from the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.

On the reverse, a bald eagle is shown flying with its wings stretched and head turned forward. This bold image was designed by Chris T. Costello of the Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso.
