On the obverse of each coin in the 2016-W Gold 100th Anniversary Centennial 3-Coin Set, you’ll find a historic portrait of Liberty. Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty appears on the 1/2 oz coin, while his Winged Liberty (familiarly called the Mercury Dime) is on the 1/10 oz coin. Hermon Atkins MacNeil’s Standing Liberty anchors the 1/4 oz coin.

The reverse designs follow the original motifs from the 1916 circulation pieces. The 1/2 oz gold coin carries Weinman’s bald eagle poised on a rock ledge, the 1/10 oz gold coin shows his Roman fasces bound with an olive branch, and the 1/4 oz gold coin features MacNeil’s bald eagle in flight.

The American Gold Centennial Series pays tribute to the major redesign of U.S. coinage begun in the early 1900s. By 1916, the long-running Barber half dollar, quarter, and dime (introduced in 1892 and designed by Charles E. Barber) were replaced by fresh artwork. Weinman created the Walking Liberty and Winged Liberty designs, and MacNeil introduced Standing Liberty, all of which became lasting favorites with collectors.

MS70 coins exhibit full, original mint luster with no visible marks under magnification. First Strike indicates the coins were received for certification within 30 days of their initial release from the mint.
