When the Mexican Mint first released the Gold Libertad in 1981, it was based on a classic design first seen on the Gold Centenario from 1921. This modern bullion coin carried forward the themes of freedom and heritage from the earlier coin. Since its debut, the Gold Libertad has been issued each year in small numbers. Now, BullionMax offers the 2014 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin online.
Coin Highlights:
The 1921 Gold Centenario served as the inspiration for the Libertad. It includes Mexico’s national coat of arms on the obverse—an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak—alongside the inscription “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.” On the reverse is the Winged Victory statue, a symbol of Mexican independence. This coin was originally minted in .900 fine gold and weighed about 41.67 grams, created both to honor the country’s independence and to serve as a reliable investment.
Each 2014 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin arrives in a plastic flip. With only 4,050 coins struck, the mintage is low, which is common for the series. The 1 oz version debuted in 1981, returned briefly from 1991 to 1994, and has been issued annually since 2000. The highest mintage was in 1981 with 596,000 coins.
The obverse side of the 2014 Gold Libertad features the Mexican coat of arms. A golden eagle is shown in the act of catching a snake while standing on a prickly pear cactus. Surrounding this image are ten earlier versions of the national seal, each representing a different time in Mexico’s history.
On the reverse, the coin shows the Winged Victory statue, located in Mexico City. This column was built in 1921 for the centennial of Mexican independence and is topped with a figure modeled after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Behind the monument, you’ll see the snow-capped volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
