The obverse of the coin features the official coat of arms of Mexico. This emblem has changed several times since Mexico gained independence, reflecting cultural and political developments. The version used today was adopted in 1968. It shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, clutching a rattlesnake in its beak and talon, with a background of water and a rock.
