James Earle Fraser originally created the designs seen on the Gold Buffalo for the Buffalo Nickel, introduced in 1913. The coin’s art pays homage to the spirit of the American frontier. The Buffalo Nickel was eventually retired in 1938 and replaced by the Jefferson Nickel. The 2008 Gold Buffalo release is the only year the U.S. Mint offered fractional-ounce versions, which came in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes in both Proof and Burnished formats.
