From 1991 to 2009, the Perth Mint produced a broader range of weights for its popular Australian Gold Kangaroo Series. Originally launched in 1986 with 1 oz and smaller fractional coins, the series expanded in 1991 to include larger options like the 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo coins. The 2 oz and 10 oz coins were eventually phased out in 2009. Today, BullionMax offers the 2000 10 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin.
Coin Highlights:
Each of these 2000 10 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins is shipped in a protective plastic flip. Although the Perth Mint set no fixed mintage for this release, final sales reached just 260 coins, making it one of the lower mintage issues in the 10 oz range. In fact, out of all the 10 oz Gold Kangaroo coins issued between 1991 and 2009, the 2000 version ranks as the fourth lowest in total mintage.
The reverse of the coin showcases the well-known image of the red kangaroo, a design that pays tribute to Australia’s numismatic history. This kangaroo artwork is based on a design that first appeared on the Australian copper penny in the early 20th century. From 1938 to 1964, this leaping kangaroo, created by British artist George Kruger Gray, was a familiar sight on the reverse of circulating pennies across the country.
The obverse of the 2000 Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a design by Ian Rank-Broadley that was introduced in 1998 and remained on Australian coinage until 2018.
On the reverse, the red kangaroo is prominently displayed. As Australia’s largest native marsupial, the red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) is a defining symbol of the continent. Adult males can grow as tall as 6 feet and weigh over 200 pounds. Their strong hind legs, long tails, and reddish coats make them instantly recognizable.
