Product Details

Chinese Gold Panda Coins are a longtime favorite with gold buyers. First issued in 1982, the standout feature of this series is the fresh Giant Panda artwork chosen each year. Only once has a design appeared twice across its four decades. Today, you can find 1996 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins with Large Dates available online from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 15th release of Gold Panda Coins!
  • Large Date specimens!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 100 Yuan by China.
  • Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests on the obverse.
  • Giant Panda cub in a tree on the reverse.

For the obverse of the 1996 1 oz Gold Panda, you’ll see the consistent design used since the series began in 1982. The building shown is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the central structure within the Temple of Heaven complex. Completed in 1420, this landmark sits in south-central Beijing and is recognized for its layered, circular architecture.

In the reverse design of the 1996 Chinese Gold Panda, the mint introduced a one-year image just for this release. It shows a young panda cub perched among tree branches. Panda cubs are known for playful behavior, which helps them build coordination and social skills as they grow and learn to live independently.

Giant pandas developed in the bamboo forests of central China over millions of years, with ancestors dating back to the late Miocene. Their specialized bamboo diet and distinctive black-and-white coat evolved to suit mountainous habitats in modern-day Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Evidence indicates pandas once lived across a wider region in southern China and into parts of Southeast Asia.

These 1996 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins arrive sealed in protective plastic and are part of the Large Date variety. “Large Date” refers to the size and spacing of the numerals in the year shown on the obverse. On these coins, the numbers appear larger and the gaps between the digits are more open compared to other date styles from the same year.
