The thick fur of the panda is made up of dense, wooly hairs that help protect it from the cold, damp conditions in bamboo forests. Each hair has a hollow center, which improves insulation much like the fur of a polar bear. Beneath the fur, a panda’s skin is black under black fur and pink under white fur. This special coloring starts early in life and stays with the panda throughout its lifetime.
