The South African Krugerrand holds a special place in the world of gold bullion. First introduced in 1967, it became the world’s original modern gold bullion coin, designed specifically to allow individuals to own gold privately. At a time when owning gold was limited in many places, the Krugerrand broke new ground by being valued in ounces instead of currency. Today, you can purchase the 1994 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1994 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin comes in an individual plastic flip for easy handling and protection. These fractional-ounce coins were added to the Krugerrand series in 1980, expanding the lineup thirteen years after the original 1 oz coin debuted. Krugerrands are made from 22-karat gold, a durable alloy containing 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, which gives the coin its distinct reddish hue.
The coin is named after Paul Kruger, a key figure in South African history. Kruger served as the final president of the South African Republic (also known as the Transvaal) between 1883 and 1900. Known for his leadership during the Boer Wars and his firm opposition to British colonial rule, Kruger became a symbol of Afrikaner determination. His legacy is complex, with his views on race and governance reflecting the attitudes of his time.
On the obverse side of the 1994 South African Gold Krugerrand , you’ll find a left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger. This design was crafted by Otto Schultz and includes the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA” to reflect the country’s two official languages at the time the coin series began.
The reverse showcases the graceful springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This image, created by artist Coert Steynberg, captures the springbok in motion, leaping across the terrain with its signature curved horns on display.
