Product Details

The Chinese Mint began producing the Gold Panda Series in 1982. For the first several decades, the coins were issued in Troy ounce weights. Starting in 2016, the series transitioned to the metric system and has been offered in Gram denominations ever since. Each release features a fresh design of the beloved Giant Panda. Today, BullionMax offers the 1991 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin with the Small Date engraving.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 10th coin in the 1 oz Gold Panda Series!
  • Small Date engraving!
  • Declared mintage of only 36,367 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse features a panda chewing on a bamboo twig.

The obverse of the 1991 1 oz Gold Panda Coin showcases the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This structure is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, a Taoist complex that dates to the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty. The design has remained a standard feature on Gold Panda coins.

On the reverse side, the 1991 Chinese Gold Panda Coin presents a relaxed panda beside a pond, nibbling on a bamboo twig. The panda’s appearance changes each year in this series, showing different views of the animal in nature.

Giant Pandas live in the mountain forests of central China, especially in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces. These gentle animals are adapted to survive on a bamboo-heavy diet, using a special bone in their wrist to grip and handle the fibrous plant. They thrive in cool, misty woodlands at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet.

Each of these 1991 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins comes sealed in plastic for protection. The Small Date version refers to the style of the date stamp, which uses more compact numerals with closer spacing. The Chinese Mint reported a total mintage of 36,367 for this particular 1 oz issue.
