In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint launched the Gold Maple Leaf Series, one of the earliest modern gold bullion options for investors. By 1982, the series set itself apart by moving to 24-karat gold. A decade later, in 1989, the mint marked the program’s 10th anniversary with special Proof Gold Maple Leafs. Right now, 1989 1 oz Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
For 1989, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf lineup included proof coins in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. These anniversary pieces were offered as a complete set with coordinated presentation, and they were also sold individually with their own packaging. The 1 oz Proof Gold Maple Leaf was among the individual options available to collectors and investors.
Each 1989 1 oz Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin offered here arrives in a protective plastic capsule only. The proof finish presents frosted design elements contrasted against mirrored fields to highlight the artwork. Notably, this 1989 issue is the final year in the Gold Maple series to use the second-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The obverse of the 1989 Proof Canadian Gold Maple Leaf displays Arnold Machin’s second-generation effigy of Her Majesty. Shown in right-profile, Queen Elizabeth II appears as she did when Machin created this portrait in 1965. This design was the first effigy used on the Maple Leaf program and appeared on Gold Maples from 1979 through 1989.
The reverse of the 1989 1 oz Proof Gold Maple Leaf features the familiar sugar maple leaf. Designed by Walter Ott in 1979, this natural rendering has been a constant across the Maple Leaf bullion family and remains one of the most recognizable motifs in modern coinage.
