Product Details

The Chinese Gold Panda Series debuted in 1982 and has become a popular choice among collectors and investors alike. Released each year by the People’s Republic of China, the coins are well-known for their yearly design changes and high gold purity. Right now, BullionMax offers the 1988 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 7th year of the Gold Panda series!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 25 Yuan by the People’s Bank of China.
  • Obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse showcases a seated panda holding a bamboo branch.

The obverse of the 1988 1/4 oz Gold Panda Coin displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, which stands in the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. This building has appeared on the obverse of all Gold Panda coins since the series started. Around the image, you’ll find inscriptions in Chinese that include the country name and the year of issue.

On the reverse of the coin, this 1988 version features a seated panda holding a bamboo branch. This peaceful scene highlights the panda’s strong connection to bamboo. Pandas rely almost entirely on bamboo for food, even though they belong to the carnivore family. Bamboo plants bloom and die in long cycles, which can create food shortages that have historically threatened panda populations.

To survive on a bamboo-heavy diet, pandas have unique traits like strong jaws, broad molars, and a thumb-like extension for grabbing stalks. Despite their digestive system not being built for plants, pandas eat between 26 and 84 pounds of bamboo daily to stay nourished.

Each 1988 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin comes sealed in a protective plastic pouch. This was the seventh release in the Gold Panda series, and the design was used on all five weight options issued that year by the Chinese Mint.
