Product Details

Since its launch in 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda Series has gained popularity among both investors and collectors. Originally released with weights based on the Troy ounce, the series later adopted updated face values after 2001. The first year of issue featured four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. The 1/20 oz option was added in 1983. Today, you can find the 1987-S 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin available online from BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • Marks the 6th release in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Final mintage around 73,000 coins!
  • Only year to feature S mint marks!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Issued a face value of 25 Yuan, guaranteed by the Chinese government.
  • Obverse displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse depicts a panda drinking from a pond.
  • Bears the S mint mark of the Shanghai Mint.

Each 1987-S 1/4 oz Chinese Gold Panda is sealed in a plastic pouch to help protect its condition. This particular release is unique in the series for carrying the S mint mark of the Shanghai Mint, a feature seen only in 1987.

Giant pandas are known to live in isolated areas, which has contributed to their endangered status. Their diet is the main reason for this limited range—each panda requires a large forested area to find enough bamboo. On average, a single panda needs up to 10 square kilometers of forest to survive. Daily bamboo consumption can reach up to 38 kilograms due to the plant’s low nutritional content.

The obverse side of the 1987-S Chinese Gold Panda Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. Located in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, this building has appeared on the obverse of Gold Panda coins every year since 1982.

On the reverse side, the 1987 design shows a panda leaning forward to drink from a pond. Gentle ripples form across the surface of the water, and bamboo stalks can be seen nearby, highlighting the panda’s natural environment.
