Product Details

The Chinese Gold Panda Series was still a fairly new collection in 1987, but this year stands out as one of the most important in its history. It is the only year when Gold Panda coins were issued at two different branch mints. Right now, BullionMax has 1987-S 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins available for purchase.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes with an individual plastic flip!
  • 6th year of release in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Struck by the Shanghai Mint!
  • Total mintage of 133,080 coins!
  • Contains 1/20 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • The face value of 5 Yuan is fully backed by the Chinese government.
  • On the obverse is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • The reverse showcases a Giant Panda leaning down for a drink from a pond.

Although giant pandas are large and mostly solitary, they are also known for their playful behavior, especially when young. Cubs and juveniles often tumble, climb trees, and wrestle with one another. Even adult pandas sometimes play, rolling down hills, sliding on snow, or exploring objects around them.

Each 1987-S 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin comes in an individual plastic flip. In this release year, the Chinese Mint struck Gold Pandas at both the Shanghai and Shenyang Mints, the only time this happened. These 1/20 oz gold coins carry an “S” mint mark on the reverse to indicate they were made at the Shanghai Mint.

The obverse of the 1987-S Gold Panda features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building, the main structure within the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing, has appeared on every Gold Panda coin since 1982 and is shown with its wide staircase leading up to the hall.

The reverse of the 1987-S 1/20 oz Gold Panda presents that year’s unique panda design, showing a Giant Panda bending its head down to drink from a pond. Play is an important part of panda life, helping young pandas develop strength and coordination while also providing enjoyment throughout all stages of their lives.
