In 1926, the United States observed its Sesquicentennial, marking 150 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. To honor this historic anniversary, the United States Mint issued a special $2.50 gold quarter eagle as part of the official Sesquicentennial celebration. Today, certified 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin offered here is graded MS62. Coins in this Mint State range typically display pleasing overall detail and remaining luster, though it may be somewhat subdued. At this level, it is common to see noticeable contact marks in key areas of the design, along with light hairlines or a small cluster of hairlines that may be visible upon closer inspection.
The Sesquicentennial celebration of 1926 came during a period of great change in American history. As the nation reflected on 150 years of independence, it also found itself in the midst of the Roaring Twenties, a time defined by economic growth, expanding cities, and new technologies. The centerpiece of the celebration was the Sesquicentennial International Exposition held in Philadelphia, which highlighted both the country’s revolutionary roots and its progress as a modern industrial nation.
The obverse of the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin features a detailed image of Lady Liberty. She is shown in flowing robes, holding a scroll in her left hand that represents the Declaration of Independence. In her right hand, Liberty carries a torch, symbolizing freedom and enlightenment. Important dates connected to the Sesquicentennial observance are also included as part of the obverse design.
On the reverse of the 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin is an image of Independence Hall, the historic Philadelphia building where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and adopted. The coin was designed by US Mint Engraver John R. Sinnock. Although a total of 200,000 coins were authorized and struck, public demand fell short of expectations. As a result, many examples were melted down, leaving a final reported surviving population of just 46,019 coins.
