The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the second—and final—design used by the U.S. Mint for the $20 Gold Double Eagle. First issued in 1907, this well-known artwork stayed in production until 1933, with some breaks around World War I. Today, you can find 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1924 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty. She moves forward with purpose, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, set against a field of sun rays.
The reverse of the 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle shows an American bald eagle soaring above a rising sun. Type II issues use Arabic numerals for the date and display 48 stars around Liberty on the obverse, with the motto “In God We Trust” on the reverse.
Saint-Gaudens drew on classical art and symbolic images of freedom when shaping this Liberty. The flowing robes, olive branch, and lifted torch suggest progress and peace—ideas that reflected the era’s optimism. While the figure was likely inspired by multiple models, Swedish immigrant Hettie Anderson is often mentioned as a key influence, and the radiant halo of sunbeams adds a timeless, classical touch.
These 1924 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins carry a Mint State 66 grade. MS66 coins offer above-average luster with only three or four small contact marks. Fine hairlines may be present, but generally only visible under magnification. Minor flaws can appear in primary focal areas, yet overall eye appeal remains strong.
