The legacy of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ $20 Double Eagle design runs deep in American coinage. Often viewed as a high point of U.S. Mint artistry, the look set a new bar for beauty and detail on circulating money. While regular-issue coins ended in 1933, the design still appears in modern American life. Right now, BullionMax has 1913-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition available.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1913-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle offered here comes sealed in a protective slab and certified at MS61. At this level, you can expect impaired mint luster with scattered groups of large and small contact marks across the fields. You may also see patches of hairlines, or one continuous hairline, visible without magnification.
Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty didn’t just influence coins of its time. It shaped how artists and engravers approached U.S. coin design for decades. When the U.S. Mint launched modern gold bullion coins in 1986, it brought back this Liberty for the American Gold Eagle series, keeping Saint-Gaudens’ vision at the center of American gold coinage.
On the obverse of the 1913-S $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, Liberty strides forward facing the viewer. She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with sunrays behind her and a ring of stars along the rim.
The reverse of the 1913-S Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle shows a powerful eagle in left-profile relief gliding over the rising sun. The 1913-S is among the lowest-minted issues of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Series. Its output of only 34,000 coins ranks as the program’s third-lowest overall and the second-lowest from San Francisco, trailing only the 1908-S.
