The 1913 Indian Head Quarter Eagle was produced at three different US Mint facilities, with 722,000 coins struck in Philadelphia, 416,000 at the Denver Mint, and 240,000 coins coming from the San Francisco Mint. Although these production figures were healthy for the time, many of the coins entered active circulation and later disappeared due to widespread melting after the passage of the Gold Reserve Act of 1934. As a result, well-preserved examples are much harder to find today. Right now, 1913 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The year 1913 marked an important period of change in American history. Woodrow Wilson took office as the nation’s 28th President, signaling the height of the Progressive Era. That same year, two major constitutional amendments were ratified: the Sixteenth Amendment allowed the federal government to collect income tax, while the Seventeenth Amendment established the direct election of U.S. Senators. In December, Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act, laying the groundwork for the modern central banking system.
All 1913 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coins available here are graded About Uncirculated 58+. Coins at this level display only light wear on the highest points of the design, with most of their original detail still intact. Luster remains strong across much of the surface, making AU58 examples highly appealing to collectors. A coin graded AU58+ represents the upper end of the About Uncirculated scale and offers excellent visual quality.
The obverse of the 1913 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle features a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a detailed feathered headdress. The word “LIBERTY” appears above the portrait, with the date shown below. Thirteen stars surround the design, symbolizing the original colonies. Sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt created this coin using an incused style, meaning the design elements are recessed into the surface rather than raised above it.
On the reverse of the 1913 $2.50 Indian Quarter Eagle Coin, a standing bald eagle is shown with its wings folded at its sides, clutching a bundle of arrows. Like the obverse, the reverse design is incused, a feature that was controversial when first released but is now celebrated as a defining characteristic of early 20th-century American gold coins.
