Augustus Saint-Gaudens reshaped American coin design with his celebrated $20 Double Eagle, first struck in 1907 at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. His bold, high-relief artwork elevated everyday money into miniature sculpture, though it was soon adjusted for practical minting. Today, 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins with No Motto are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907 and quickly stood out among U.S. coinage. The 1908 run is notable for having two versions. Early in the year, coins were struck without the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Following public input, the Mint added the motto partway through the year, creating both 1908 No Motto and 1908 With Motto issues.
All 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are the No Motto variety and carry an MS64 certification. Coins in this grade show an average, sometimes slightly above-average strike. You may notice a few clear marks or hairlines, while any additional imperfections remain minor.
On the obverse of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles is the famous figure of Liberty. She appears full-length, moving forward toward the viewer, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol rests near her feet, with sun rays and a ring of stars filling the field.
The reverse of 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins features an American bald eagle in left-profile relief. Its wings are raised as it glides across the sky above a rising sun, a scene that complements the energy of the obverse.
