In the obverse design of 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This full-length, forward-facing figure strides toward the viewer, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Sun rays radiate behind Liberty, with the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet and a ring of stars surrounding the scene.

For the reverse of 1908 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins, the mint features the American bald eagle. The bird appears in left-profile relief, gliding over the rays of a rising sun. The country of issue and the coin’s face value are displayed on this side.

These 1908 $20 Double Eagles are Type I specimens in the series. The Type I obverse shows a ring of 46 stars for the states in the Union when the coin debuted. The Type I reverse omits the motto IN GOD WE TRUST between the sun and its rays near the lower rim. Midway through 1908, the reverse was updated to add the motto, and in 1912 the obverse star count changed to reflect the admission of New Mexico and Arizona.
