Product Details

Liberty Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint offer a glimpse into the legacy of the California Gold Rush. These coins were made with 90% gold and 10% copper, and the gold used in earlier years often came from placer mining, where it was panned from rivers and streams. As mining methods improved, later coins were made using gold extracted from hydraulic and hard rock mining. Today, you can purchase 1902-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins at BullionMax.

San Francisco-minted Double Eagles were widely recognized in international markets, especially in China. These coins were valued for their reliable gold content and were often used in place of local currencies. In 1902, San Francisco produced the vast majority of the nation’s Double Eagles, with over 1.75 million coins struck. In contrast, the Philadelphia Mint made only around 31,000.

The obverse of the 1902-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a profile of Lady Liberty. Created by James B. Longacre, this left-facing portrait shows Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.

On the reverse side of 1902-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is the Great Seal of the United States. This Type III design includes a bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, a shield at its chest, and a ring of stars above its head. It also features the national motto and the denomination written as “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
