The 1890 $20 Liberty Double Eagle is one of three versions of the coin made that year. It was struck at the Carson City Mint, where just over 91,000 were produced. That makes it one of the lower-mintage entries in the Liberty Double Eagle lineup, adding to its appeal for collectors.

The reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle appears with a shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. As a Type III version of the coin, it includes the national motto and a clearer display of the denomination.
