The 1884 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins were minted at three different facilities in the United States, each producing them in varying quantities. The San Francisco Mint struck the majority with around 916,000 pieces, while the Carson City Mint produced far fewer. This listing features the San Francisco issue, the 1884-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, now available to purchase from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1884-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle offered here has been graded Mint State 62 and is secured in a protective slab. Coins at this grade level may have slightly muted luster, a mix of small and large contact marks, and visible hairlines.
Minting in 1884 reflected a steady period in American economic history. The large output at San Francisco served the needs of the West Coast economy, which relied heavily on the local availability of gold and coinage. By contrast, other mints operated at smaller scales depending on regional demand.
The obverse of the 1884-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle displays a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, the image shows Liberty in profile facing left, with detailed curls and a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY.” Surrounding her are 13 stars representing the original colonies.
The reverse side features the Great Seal of the United States, as seen on Type III Double Eagles. A bald eagle appears at the center with a shield on its chest, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The coin includes the national motto and an updated layout for the denomination.
