Introduced in 1849 after the California Gold Rush boosted the nation’s gold supply, the $20 Liberty Head double eagle met the need for higher-value coinage. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, it’s known for Liberty’s coronet portrait and classic 19th-century styling. Right now, BullionMax is offering 1870 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins graded AU53.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1870 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle listed here is certified AU53. About Uncirculated coins at this level show light wear focused on the highest points, with details that remain strong. You may see medium to near-full mint luster depending on the individual piece.
Liberty Head double eagles were produced from 1849 to 1907 at several mints, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver. Total output reached into the tens of millions, but yearly mintages varied with gold flows and the economy. Some periods, such as the early 1860s, saw tighter production, while later Western discoveries supported larger runs.
The obverse of the 1870 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet. Thirteen stars encircle the design to represent the original states, and the date appears below the bust to mark the year of issue.
The reverse of the 1870 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle displays the Great Seal of the United States: a forward-facing eagle with a shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. As a Type II reverse, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is included above the eagle, and the denomination is shown as TWENTY D.
