Product Details

Production of the US $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle in the 1850s was a direct answer to the California Gold Rush, which brought a large amount of new gold into the country that needed to be turned into usable money. First struck in 1850, this $20 gold coin carried James B. Longacre’s portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, surrounded by thirteen stars. Often called the Liberty Coronet Double Eagle, this design became the longest-running look for the $20 Double Eagle. Today, 1854 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.

In 1854, the United States was enjoying growth and development, helped along by new railroad lines, western migration, and expanding farm production, even as deeper disagreements were starting to appear. New rail routes linking the East Coast with the Midwest encouraged trade and travel, and gold from California continued to support the nation’s money supply. At the same time, rising speculation in land and railroad ventures was building financial risk, and arguments over the spread of slavery into new territories were straining relations between North and South, hinting at the financial troubles that would emerge with the Panic of 1857.

All 1854 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here are in XF45 condition. In this grade, you can expect light wear on the highest design points, while some original mint luster may still be visible. Several US Mint locations struck these coins to support everyday commerce, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, and the newly opened San Francisco Mint, which quickly became vital for handling the flow of gold from the West.

On the obverse of 1854 Liberty Double Eagles, you will see Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Longacre’s design shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown inscribed with her name, with 13 stars arranged around her image in the field, along with the year of issue.

The reverse of the 1854 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin displays the Great Seal of the United States. Here, a bald eagle appears facing forward, set behind the US national shield and clutching both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch to represent war and peace.
