The Capped Bust design followed the earlier Draped Bust series and appeared on U.S. silver coins from 1807 to 1839, marking a shift in American coin artistry. Designed by German-born assistant engraver John Reich, the motif shows Liberty in a soft cloth cap. Today, 1829 Capped Bust Dimes in certified condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Capped Bust look was used across several denominations—half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and briefly on the half eagle and eagle in gold. Reich’s approach introduced stronger depth and modeling compared to the flatter style seen on earlier issues. Over its production run, the series saw small updates, including changes to star counts and placement on the obverse, as well as refinements to the eagle on the reverse.
All 1829 Capped Bust Dimes offered here are certified in About Uncirculated 58. AU58 coins show only light wear and can sometimes be mistaken for uncirculated pieces at first glance. You can expect just trace friction at the highest points, with medium to near-full original mint luster still visible.
Obverse design elements on 1829 Capped Bust Dimes present Reich’s Liberty, as engraved by William Kneass. Liberty appears in left-profile relief wearing the familiar Phrygian, or Liberty, cap, and her hair is gathered into curls that frame the portrait.
Reverse visuals feature the classic U.S. heraldic eagle. The bald eagle is shown facing forward while looking to its right (coin left), set before the national shield. In its talons are the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, a balanced symbol long used on American coinage.
