The San Antonio Spurs franchise was founded in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association (ABA). In 1973, the team relocated to San Antonio and adopted its current name, the Spurs. The franchise became one of four ABA teams to join the NBA during the 1976 merger and has since become a model of consistency and small-market success.
