The Philadelphia 76ers franchise began in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals, one of the original teams in the National Basketball League. The Nationals joined the Basketball Association of America during the merger that formed the NBA and captured their first championship in 1955 while still in Syracuse. In 1963, the team relocated to Philadelphia and adopted the “76ers” name to honor the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
