The Orlando Magic joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1989, beginning play during the 1989–90 season. The team’s name was chosen through fan voting, with “Magic” selected to reflect both the influence of Disney in Orlando and the sense of wonder and excitement the franchise hoped to inspire.
