The Los Angeles Clippers franchise was founded in 1970 as the Buffalo Braves, one of three expansion teams that joined the NBA that year. After several years in Buffalo, the team relocated to San Diego in 1978, where it was renamed the Clippers in honor of the sailing ships that once filled San Diego Bay.
