The Indiana Pacers were founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Their name honors Indiana’s heritage in harness racing and the Indianapolis 500 pace car tradition. The team became an ABA powerhouse, winning three championships before joining the NBA in 1976.
