The Brooklyn Nets franchise was founded in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA). A year later, the team moved to Long Island and became the New York Nets. During their ABA years, the Nets won two championships before joining the NBA in 1976, when they relocated to New Jersey as the New Jersey Nets.
