Known as the “White Dove of the Desert,” San Xavier del Bac is an example of Spanish Colonial architecture located south of Tucson on the Tohono O’odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. Founded in 1692 by Father Eusebio Kino, the current church was completed in 1797 and is recognized for its baroque facade and interior with frescoes, statuary, and murals that reflect both European and indigenous traditions.

The 1/2 Arizona Goldback shows a Spanish woman kneeling with a candle, with San Xavier del Bac in the background and white doves in flight. In the 1690s, Jesuit missionaries led by Father Eusebio Kino traveled through the Sonoran Desert, working to establish missions and introduce livestock, crops, and farming techniques. Their efforts took place in a challenging landscape with extreme heat, limited water, and difficult terrain, alongside interactions with local communities.
