The American Gold Buffalo was introduced in 2006 as the first 24-karat gold coin ever offered by the United States Mint to the public. Its release marked an important moment for American bullion, giving investors access to a .9999 pure gold coin that could stand alongside some of the world’s most recognized gold bullion programs. Today, 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins in themed presentation cards are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin in this listing is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coin is securely housed within a presentation card featuring an American bison alongside the Stars and Stripes on the front. The back of the card recognizes the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States with a special commemorative design element.
The design of the American Gold Buffalo comes from James Earle Fraser’s famous Buffalo Nickel, first released in 1913. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic designs in American coinage, Fraser’s artwork was inspired by real-life subjects and reflected the people and wildlife of the American frontier. The same imagery continues to appear on the Gold Buffalo series today.
The obverse of the 2026 American Gold Buffalo showcases Fraser’s portrait of an indigenous figure. Created as a composite image using features from several Native American individuals, the design presents a right-profile portrait with detailed facial features and a single feather in the subject’s hair. It remains one of the most recognizable portraits in American coin history.
On the reverse of 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins is the American bison. Fraser based this design on Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York. The animal is shown standing atop a small mound, with its powerful build and distinctive appearance carefully captured in the design.
