The Mexican coat of arms has gone through several updates since the country gained independence. While details have changed over time, the central imagery has remained the same. The modern design, finalized in 1968, shows a golden eagle in profile with partially raised wings. The eagle holds a rattlesnake in its beak and talons while standing on a prickly pear cactus that rises from a rocky base surrounded by water.
