The Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most recognizable creations from the ancient world. Its detailed imagery and cultural meaning have made it a popular design for modern bullion rounds. Today, these designs are carefully recreated on precious metal pieces, giving collectors a chance to own a version of this historic artwork. Struck in silver, these rounds offer both metal value and a connection to the legacy of the Aztec civilization. Right now, 5 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available online from BullionMax.
Round Highlights:
These 5 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds come packaged in protective plastic flips. At 5 oz, this is the largest size offered in the Aztec Calendar series and stands out among silver rounds, with only larger silver bars exceeding it in size. The series also includes smaller silver rounds and a copper option for those interested in different sizes and metals.
On the obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round, you will find the detailed Sun Stone design. Originally carved from a single block of basalt, the stone reflects both artistic skill and the Aztecs’ understanding of time and the universe. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-shaped tongue tied to ritual traditions. Surrounding him are four sections representing earlier ages of the world in Aztec belief. Beyond that is a ring showing the twenty day signs of the ritual calendar. The outer areas include decorative patterns, symbolic elements, and two fire serpents that frame the entire design.
The reverse of the 5 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round features a right-facing image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became the final ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was related to Moctezuma II. During the Spanish invasion led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc organized the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite his leadership, the city fell in 1521. He was later captured and executed in 1525.
After the fall of Tenochtitlán, the Spanish dismantled much of the city’s ceremonial center as they built Mexico City over its remains. Many important artifacts were lost or buried during this time. The Sun Stone itself was hidden for centuries before it was rediscovered, helping preserve an important piece of Aztec history.
