The Aztec Sun Stone was rediscovered on December 17, 1790, during repair work at Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral in the central plaza known as the Zócalo. Workers came across the large carved stone while excavating, bringing it back into view after centuries. Officials and historians at the time quickly understood its importance. The stone was initially displayed at the cathedral before later being moved to a museum where it could be preserved more carefully.

On the obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Bar, the full Sun Stone design is shown with attention to its original features. At the center is Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun god, surrounded by four panels that represent earlier world ages in Aztec belief. Around these central elements are circular bands that include the 20 day-signs of the Aztec calendar, along with solar rays and symbols linked to wealth, such as jade and turquoise. The design is completed by two Xiuhcoatl fire serpents that wrap around the outer edge.
