The United States Mint updated the American Eagle silver and gold coin programs in 2021 with new design changes. Midway through the year, both collections introduced refreshed reverse artwork, resulting in two different versions of the 2021 Silver Eagle. Collectors had the opportunity to purchase coins with the original reverse design and coins featuring the new image. Among the special releases from the mint is the 2-Coin Designer Set, which includes both 2021 versions struck in reverse proof finish. In 2020, the US Mint selected Emily Damstra’s soaring bald eagle design from a group of more than 35 candidates to serve as the new reverse for the Silver Eagle. Damstra has worked with both the Royal Canadian Mint and the United States Mint and is also a member of the US Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.

Each 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Designer Set is housed in a two-coin plastic slab and includes a special 35th-anniversary label. Coins graded PF70 show full mint luster and no visible imperfections. Early Release coins were submitted to NGC within 30 days of their release from the mint. The reverse proof finish features mirrored design details with frosted background fields, offering a distinct look compared to traditional proof coins.

The obverse of the coins in the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Designer Set displays the classic Walking Liberty image. This design was created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 and originally appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

On the reverse of the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle Designer Set coins, two different designs are included. The Type 1 coin presents John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design. The Type 2 coin showcases Emily Damstra’s soaring bald eagle in flight.
