The United States Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle in 2021 with two different releases during the year. Early in 2021, Type 1 coins continued to feature the long-running reverse from John Mercanti. Later in the year, the Mint introduced the new Type 2 reverse created by Emily Damstra. Along with this change, updated design details were added to both the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle series. The year 2021 brought the first major design update to the American Silver Eagle since the series began in 1986. From January through mid-year, the US Mint continued striking coins with Mercanti’s heraldic eagle reverse. After a short pause in production, the Mint began issuing coins with the new Type 2 reverse just before July 2021, making it the first time both designs were released in the same year.

Each of the 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins offered here has been graded Mint State 70 by PCGS. An MS70 grade indicates a coin with full mint luster and no visible imperfections. These coins feature the PCGS Blue Label, which is commonly used for MS70 and MS69 examples. The First Strike designation means the coin was submitted to PCGS within 30 days of its original release from the US Mint.

On the obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 is the classic Walking Liberty design from Adolph A. Weinman. First introduced in 1916 on the half dollar, Liberty is shown walking toward the rising sun with the American flag draped around her shoulders. As part of the 2021 updates, Weinman’s “AW” initials are now visible in the lower-right area of the design.

The reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 features a bald eagle in flight carrying an oak branch, designed by Emily Damstra. The Mint reviewed more than 30 different concepts before choosing this new image. It replaced the Mercanti heraldic eagle design that had appeared on the coin for 35 years.
