In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary of independence, Goldbacks has released a special one-time Washington D.C. Goldback. Washington D.C. became the nation’s capital following the Residence Act of 1790, a compromise influenced by Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This design brings attention to America’s original female allegory, Columbia, featured as the central figure. Today, 1 Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Notes in GEM 70 condition are available online at BullionMax.
Note Highlights:
On the obverse of the Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note, Columbia stands prominently in the foreground, with the U.S. Capitol Building visible behind her. Columbia has historically been shown with symbolic elements that reflect American ideals. Her shield traditionally represents defense, the protection of liberty, and the resolve to safeguard independence and democratic principles. The sword stands for strength, readiness, and the willingness to defend freedom and justice when necessary. Together, these elements present the nation as a protector of its values and a country prepared to uphold its founding principles.
The federal district was formed from land contributed by Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River. Its location was chosen to sit between northern and southern states. President George Washington selected the exact site and appointed Pierre Charles L’Enfant to design the city that would later carry Washington’s name. Although the government officially relocated from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in 1800, the new capital developed gradually over the years that followed.
Each 1 Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note available here comes in GEM 70 condition and is sealed in a protective plastic currency slab. Notes with this grade show no visible signs of handling, even under magnification of up to five times. A key feature of GEM 70 notes is a perfectly centered design. These notes also include colorized details that enhance the artwork, along with updated security elements and a refreshed Goldback wordmark symbol.
