Pre-1933 American gold coins remain popular with collectors throughout the United States. Gold coins struck between 1834 and 1933 are known for their consistent standards, offering set weights for each denomination and a gold content of 90% gold and 10% copper. With strong gold purity and ties to important moments in US history, these classic pieces continue to hold a steady place in many collections. Today, 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in this listing has been certified AU58 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. A grade of AU58 places the coin at the highest end of the About Uncirculated scale, which ranges from 50 to 58. Coins at this level are often referred to as “sliders” because they show only slight friction on the highest points of the design and may retain much of their original mint luster.
The 1858-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is among the earlier issues from the San Francisco Mint, which opened in 1854 during the height of the California Gold Rush. Designed by James B. Longacre, this $20 gold coin pairs the Liberty Head portrait on the obverse with a heraldic eagle on the reverse. Although the total mintage reached 846,710 coins, many examples entered circulation or were used in overseas trade, making higher-grade pieces more difficult to locate today.
The obverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin shows Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” while 13 stars surround the design to represent the original colonies. The year of issue, 1858, appears at the bottom of the design.
On the reverse of the 1858-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle, you will find a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. Surrounding inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY D.” This Type I reverse was later updated in 1866 to include the national motto and revised again in 1877 to spell out DOLLARS in full.
