On the obverse design of the Hades Silverback Silver Note, Hades appears with a serious expression as he grips the leash of Cerberus, the guard of his domain. The underworld, which shared its name with its ruler, was imagined as an enormous world beneath the earth where every mortal soul would arrive after death, no matter how that person lived. Cerberus, the famous three-headed hound, was said to stand watch at the entrance and keep any soul from escaping once it entered.

On the reverse design, the note features a mirrored version of the obverse, creating a matching image on the opposite side. Cerberus is often described with three dog heads, a serpent tail, and in some stories, snakes twisting from his back or mane. He was considered a near-impossible obstacle between the living world and the realm of the dead. Even so, a handful of legendary figures found ways past him—Orpheus calmed him with music, Heracles captured him during his twelfth labor, and the Sibyl used honey cakes mixed with drugs to put him to sleep so Aeneas could continue forward.
