The Seated Liberty Half Dollar was produced by the United States Mint from 1839 to 1891 and holds an important place in the history of American coinage. Because the series was struck for more than five decades, collectors encounter many different dates, mint marks, and design adjustments along the way. This particular 1861 coin comes from a pivotal year in the nation’s history, issued as the United States entered the opening stages of the Civil War. Today, certified 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is closely tied to a defining moment in American history. As the Civil War began in 1861, the nation faced deep divisions that would shape its future. Coins produced during this period provide collectors with a tangible link to that time. Many numismatists appreciate the 1861 issue not only for its connection to the Civil War, but also for the different die marriages and production details that specialists often study within the series.
All 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Coins offered here come graded Mint State 62 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Coins with an MS62 grade display overall acceptable eye appeal. You may notice groups of small marks across the surfaces, along with the possibility of a few larger contact marks in the main focal areas. Light hairlines are also common for coins at this grade level.
On the obverse of the 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is Christian Gobrecht’s design of Liberty seated on a rock. She is shown wearing flowing robes while holding a Union shield in her left hand. In her right hand, she supports a pole topped with a liberty cap. Thirteen stars appear around the outer edge of the design, representing the original colonies, while the date is displayed at the bottom.
The reverse of the 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar features a heraldic eagle with its wings spread. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, with a shield set across its chest. Surrounding inscriptions identify the issuing nation and the denomination of the coin.
