The United States Two Cent Piece was produced from 1864 to 1873 and holds an important place in the history of American coinage. It was the first U.S. coin to feature the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” a phrase that later became a standard element on American currency. Though the denomination was only issued for about a decade, the series remains appealing to collectors because it has a relatively small number of dates along with a mix of common coins and a few scarcer issues. This 1865 example was struck near the end of the Civil War and carries a BN designation. Right now, 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins in certified condition are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
These 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins have a Mint State 63 grade with a BN (Brown) designation. The BN label refers to the color of the copper surfaces. A BN coin retains less than 5% of its original red copper tone, with the remainder displaying the deeper brown color that develops over time. Coins graded MS63 generally offer pleasing overall eye appeal, though they may show several small contact marks, a few heavier marks in scattered areas, and light hairlines that can be seen without magnification.
On the obverse of the 1865 Two Cent Piece is a design created by James B. Longacre. The central element is a Union shield, representing national unity, with a bundle of crossed arrows above it. A ribbon banner stretches across the top with the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST,” marking the first time this motto appeared on a United States coin.
The reverse of 1865 Two Cent Piece Coins features the denomination “2 CENTS” in the center of the field. Surrounding the text is a wreath made of wheat and other crops, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the outer edge. The overall layout is simple and balanced, reflecting both agricultural themes and national identity during the Civil War period.
The 1865 issue was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the closing stage of the Civil War, adding historical significance to the coin. With more than 13 million pieces struck, it is considered one of the more obtainable dates in the short-lived series. This availability allows collectors to add a certified example from an important moment in American history without the higher cost seen with rarer dates. The coin itself was struck using a bronze alloy composed of 95% copper, with the remaining balance of tin and zinc.
