The Draped Bust Silver Dollar was struck by the United States Mint from 1795 through 1804 and is widely recognized as one of the most important early American silver coins. Created by engraver Robert Scot, the design introduced a refined image of Liberty with flowing hair and a draped bust on the obverse. In 1798, the series adopted a new reverse featuring a heraldic eagle, replacing the earlier small eagle design. Today, the 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar is available for purchase online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse design of the 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar shows Lady Liberty in right-facing profile. This was only the second obverse style used on US silver dollars and marked a shift toward a more detailed and classical look. Liberty is shown with long, flowing hair, and the design is surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. Many historians believe that Robert Scot based Liberty’s portrait on Ann Willing Bingham, a well-known Philadelphia socialite of the era.
On the reverse of the 1800 Draped Bust Dollar, collectors will find the heraldic eagle design, which was still relatively new to the series at the time. First introduced in 1798, this reverse shows a bald eagle holding a shield across its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps arrows symbolizing defense and an olive branch representing peace. Above the eagle’s head, 13 stars are arranged in a compact pattern.
The 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar was produced during a formative period in American history. At the turn of the 19th century, the United States remained largely rural, with most citizens living on farms or in small communities. Coinage shortages were common, and foreign coins such as Spanish silver dollars often circulated more widely than domestically minted currency. These early silver dollars played an important role in establishing confidence in the nation’s monetary system.
These 1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar Coins are graded VF25 by PCGS. Coins in Very Fine condition typically show moderate wear across the design, with finer details still visible but softened from circulation. The Dotted Date designation refers to small dots located near the “1800” date on the obverse, a distinctive feature collectors use to identify this specific variety.
