On the obverse of the 2014-W 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle, you’ll see Lady Liberty in a design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. First introduced in 1907 on the $20 Double Eagle, the artwork shows Liberty walking forward with confidence, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

The reverse of the 2014-W Proof American Gold Eagle features the original family scene designed by Miley Busiek. In this design, a male eagle flies above the nest while a female eagle stays close, protecting the young hatchlings below.

The 2014 proof release arrived during a period when overall demand for Proof Gold Eagles was softer than earlier highs. A recent high point came in 2010, when the US Mint produced 54,285 coins in the 1/10 oz proof size, and 59,480 coins in the 1 oz proof option. By 2014, the 1/10 oz proof mintage had dropped to 22,725 coins. Even so, that total was actually higher than the mintages recorded for the 2012 and 2013 issues.
