The Perth Mint introduced the Silver Kookaburra Series in 1990, making it one of the first major bullion coin collections to celebrate a native Australian animal. Over the years, the series has gained a loyal global following thanks to its annually changing artwork, dependable minting standards, and focus on one of Australia’s best-known birds. Today, the 2013 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 2013 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is the largest option available in this year’s lineup and comes sealed in a protective plastic capsule. The 2013 release included 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo versions of the coin. The 1 oz coin reached its full mintage of 500,000 pieces, while the larger sizes had no fixed limit for the year. When sales closed, the 10 oz coin finished with 24,481 coins sold and the 1 kilo coin concluded with a total of 41,911 pieces.
On the obverse of the 2013 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design shows a right-facing portrait of the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Diamond Tiara. Rank-Broadley’s depiction appeared on Australian coins from 1999 through 2018 and remains one of the longest-used portraits in the history of the Kookaburra series.
The reverse side of the 2013 1 Kilo Silver Kookaburra Coin features a design by artist Natasha Muhl. Her artwork shows two young kookaburras perched together on a gum tree branch with Australian bush flowers in the background. This design stands out within the series because it highlights a pair of juvenile birds, while many Kookaburra releases focus on a single bird.
Within First Nations traditions, the kookaburra carries important meaning as a totem animal and is often viewed as a spiritual messenger. Its appearance can symbolize guidance and connection for the families and communities that hold it sacred. More generally, the kookaburra is known for its distinctive call that resembles laughter, and the bird is often associated with joy, optimism, and positive fortune.
