The Australian Silver Kookaburra series debuted from the Perth Mint in 1990 and has become one of the most recognized silver bullion coin programs in the world. Each year brings a new image of the well-known kookaburra bird, giving investors and collectors something different to look forward to. Since 2018, the coins have been struck in .9999 pure silver and feature a standard weight of one troy ounce, offering both precious metal value and changing annual designs. Today, the 1999 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1999 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is packaged in a protective plastic capsule. For 1999, the 1 oz Silver Kookaburra had a maximum mintage of 300,000 coins. However, final sales reached only 109,364 coins. While this was slightly higher than the previous year’s total, it was still much lower than mintages recorded earlier in the 1990s from 1990 through 1997.
The 1999 issue represents the tenth release in the Silver Kookaburra series. Reaching this milestone reflected the steady popularity of the program throughout the decade. As with prior releases, the Perth Mint maintained strong production standards while presenting a new take on the beloved Australian bird.
On the obverse of the 1999 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This effigy, introduced in 1998, shows Her Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The design also includes inscriptions noting the coin’s face value and country of issue.
The reverse of the 1999 1 oz Silver Kookaburra Coin features two kookaburras perched together on a tree branch. Unlike earlier designs that often focused on a single bird, this composition highlights a pair, capturing a natural moment between the two. Fine details in the feathers and branchwork add depth to the design while keeping the layout balanced and easy to appreciate.
