Founded in 1894 by Boston Brahmin astronomer Percival Lowell on a pine-covered mesa above Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory set out to study Mars and to look for the canal features Lowell believed pointed to intelligent life. Though those Martian ideas were later set aside, the observatory drew leading researchers and took advantage of Flagstaff’s elevation, clear skies, and dark nights, growing into a hub for planetary and cosmological discovery.

On the 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Note, you’ll see the female allegory of Curiosity at work at Lowell Observatory. On February 18, 1930, Clyde Tombaugh—a 23-year-old Kansas farm worker turned astronomer hired to continue Percival Lowell’s search for a predicted ninth planet—spotted a faint moving point while comparing photographic plates from the observatory’s 13-inch telescope. After careful checks, Lowell Observatory announced the discovery on March 13, 1930—what would have been Percival Lowell’s 75th birthday—of the planet Pluto, a name suggested by an 11-year-old in England, referencing the Roman god of the underworld.
