The Denver Nuggets were founded in 1967 as the Denver Larks in the American Basketball Association (ABA) before quickly changing their name to the Rockets. In 1974, the team became the Nuggets to honor Denver’s original professional basketball club from the late 1940s and to recognize Colorado’s gold rush heritage.
